Those conditions put different kinds of stress on materials. But when you’re looking at a 40-50 year life-span as opposed to 20 with asphalt, and an out-of-the-gate higher resale value that doesn’t drop to 0 at years 20, the math starts tipping the other way. It’s also a much better reflector of radiant heat. The fact that you live in a concrete oven has not escaped my attention. If you’re looking at composite or cedar shake or something else because hail happens, see if you can find Class 4 Impact Resistance rated versions of those materials. They’ve all been tested against a certain size of simulated hailstone traveling at a certain speed to get that rating. They will save you some heartache. Fifth: What’s your roof’s pitch? The System, Not Just the Shingle

Flashing is another underestimated component. Every intersection, valleys, chimneys, skylights, dormers, is a point where water actively tries to enter. Improperly installed or corroded flashing is one of the most common causes of leaks that homeowners attribute to shingle failure. The shingles are often fine. The flashing isn’t.

Ice damming deserves attention in colder climates. When attic heat escapes unevenly through the roof deck, snow melts, runs to the cold eaves, and refreezes. That ice backs up under shingles in a way no surface product can fully prevent. The fix is proper attic insulation combined with effective ventilation, addressed before, not after, installation.

Attic Ventilation is a Warranty Issue, Not Just a Comfort Issue

When your roof has the right "airflow," it can last longer. Poor ventilation means excess heat and moisture that can lead to damaged insulation, warped wood, and rusty nails. Over time, it can even cause sheathing and rafters to rot. This adds up to a roof that sags and leaks long before it should.

So how do you make sure your roof has the right airflow? Intake and exhaust. Your roof needs the continuous movement of air. Any blockage can cause problems. Your roof is only as good as the air above it.

How to Vet a Contractor For Your Specific Material

This is where a lot of homeowners take unnecessary risk. Installation technique varies significantly across material types. A company with excellent asphalt experience may not have the right skills for standing seam metal, which requires different tools, fastening methods, and expansion joint management. When you’re evaluating contractors, ask specifically about their experience with the material you’ve chosen. Ask for references on similar projects.
